folklore
Folklore: Stories, customs, and beliefs that are passed down from one generation to the next. Common types of folklore include fables/folktales, myths, tall tales, and fairy tales.
Fables: Short stories that teach a lesson (moral) and the characters are animals that act like humans (personification).
Example: Tortoise and the Hare- teaches slow and steady wins the race/don't be cocky/don't judge someone based on their looks.
Myths: Ancient (Greek/Roman) fictional stories that involve gods and heroes that explain parts of the natural world and human nature.
Example: Hercules - the story of a man who was half god and half mortal (human). He grew so strong and completed 12 deeds (labors) so that he was able to live in the heavens with the other gods.
Tall Tales: Exaggerated (hyperbole) stories that are told as if they are true.
Example: Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox- A story of two giants. While searching for firewood Paul Bunyan created the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe behind him.
-Paul dug out the Great Lakes to give Babe a place to drink.

Example:Cinderella - the story of a young girl forced to work for her evil step mother and step sisters. Through magic she is able to go to the royal ball and win the prince's heart and her step-family is punished.
